Masterpiece Jianshui Purple Clay Teapot Wood-fired Dragon Egg
This extraordinary, one-of-a-kind dragon egg teapot, crafted in a timeless, classical shape, embodies the pinnacle of wood-fired Jian Shui clay artistry. It is a rare masterpiece handcrafted by the highly acclaimed Jian Shui clay master, Lang Gui, whose expertise in high-quality wood-firing is unparalleled. The teapot’s surface is adorned with the natural, unpredictable beauty of wood-firing, showcasing a stunning array of colors—red, purple, metallic, brown, and more—each shifting with the light from different angles.
What makes this teapot especially rare is the elusive reddish metallically hue, regarded as Yao Bao, meaning "the treasure of the kiln." Achieving this fiery red color is one of the most difficult feats in the kiln, requiring skill and precision that only a few masters can master. Lang Gui, with his exceptional talent, is the pioneer in wood-firing technique in Jianshui pottery in the 1990s after he studied pottery from Japan. He has since earned many national pottery awards for his groundbreaking work in various arts and crafts competitions and still remain as the leader in wood-firing.
Jian Shui clay itself is sourced from the famed “five-color clay” mountains, rich with deposits of red, yellow, purple, white, and brown soils—referred to as Wu Se Tu. The high iron content in the clay results in rich, earthy tones, with many pieces showcasing a striking mix of black, red, and copper hues. Rooted in a tradition that dates back over 1,200 years to the Tang dynasty, Jian Shui Purple Clay Pottery is revered as one of China’s four most prestigious pottery styles.
